Hi! Yesterday I gave my first lecture/presentation/demonstration/discussion on computers at Skokie Public Library. If you click on the title of this blog post you will get a link to the website where my presentation slides and hound-outs are. The name of the class is Everything You Wanted to Know about Storage.
It's nice to be able to share what I know with people who respect what I've been able to teach myself about computers.
It was a lot of extra work putting it together but I did it in the name of public service, well that's only half true, I actually did it because I thought it would be an interesting challenge, and now that it's all done with I'm very proud of it.
I hope everyone turns their music extra loud today and does a little dance, if not for me then just for the hell of it.
Rock on family!

I have had a lot of time to think about what public service is and what it entails to the individual undertaking such a challenge. Personally, I feel there is a level of personal sacrifice involved. But the strange thing is, for me it's not the kind of sacrifice that makes one feel lacking or giving up something. It is a sacrifice, for me at least, that says I will not get paid as much as the average Joe, while I work twice as hard as him, but I must live with it as part of my service. I find that more money only pollutes my life with more things and more special events (eating out & entertainment) which result in having less time to explore important things (who I am, for instance). I think public service of any kind is much more rewarding than it is a sacrifice.
Also, Star Trek has the right idea where people have their basic needs met- for instance, education for all, food, water, shelter, safety. I think if more people would realize that public service is a service working towards giving all people these basic needs, they would be more inclined to serve.
Had some killer sushi tonight!
Good work Dan! I am going to check that stuff out right now.
Hey Dan, looks like a very impressive handout. I will pump the music extra loud today! New Killers CD out soon, have you heard the "Are we Humans" song? It is very mellow and a little uplifting in that "get off my case" kind of way, where "my case" = "not a robot". Uh, don't know where I'm going with that.
@Tony: looks like you've come to the realization that life is a dream, entailing responsibility to other dreamers. What next enlightened one? What next?
Wow, nice job. You explained the subject clearly in plain language for those of us who don't speak computer tech.
